Top 8 Internet Security Tips
- Ensure you have a Firewall protecting you from malicious threats attacking your computer or network.
- Ensure you have a good anti virus / anti spyware software and is configured correctly. You would want it to update itself everyday through a scheduled update feature. You would also want it set up to scan for viruses at least twice a week.
- Configure windows update on your computer so that it may download and install the latest updates automatically.
- If you are using a wireless router, ensure you have this set up and configured securely. If security on your wireless router is not set up you are risking hackers in your area being able to see and steal your data! This could be as drastic as your credit card information when you are purchasing goods from the Internet.
- Do not reply to any emails with confidential information such as your bank details or your address. Companies such as banks never send emails to their customers requesting for this, it is almost always a scam, so beware! If you think it's real then ring the bank directly, or visit their website, not via the email link but by opening a new browser and specifying their URL address or company name, and double check this is the case.
- Ensure you change your router's default password to something only you know. If this is left unchanged, a hacker outside your home or office can get into your router!
- When browsing the Internet, do NOT click on banners and ADDs which say something like "You have caught a virus, click here for a full system scan" or "You are a Winner", these ads themselves are viruses and spyware.
- When purchasing goods from the Internet, ensure it is a secure web page you are specifying your payments on. You can find this out by checking the websites Privacy Notice, or you will see a padlock sign in the bottom or top right corner of the website indicating they using SSL security to encrypt your payment data.
- Ensure all other applications are kept up to date with latest patches.
- Encrypt files and folders using an encryption software such as Truecrypt.
